Maangchi's letter to you
Happy New Year on the 1st day of 2022!!
I just want to give you a very big thank you for reading my letter, watching my videos, cooking from my recipes, posting your photos, and writing comments and messages to me. Sharing my cooking and recipes with you brings me joy year after year, it's really an incredible gift for me to be part of your life and meals. I wish you and all you love a very happy and healthy new year in 2022.
New recipe: Steamed egg in an earthenware bowl
I updated my steamed eggs in earthenware bowl (ttukbaegi gyeranjjim) recipe that I originally posted 10 years ago! Since then I’ve developed a simpler way to make it, one I’ve been using at home over the past few years. It’s so easy to make that I’m sure you'll do it often, just like me. When you're busy but want to make a quick, delicious meal, make this and eat it with rice and kimchi. Your stomach will feel happy and satisfied!
New recipe: Pepper fried chicken
Here's a delicious Korean Chinese dish called yuringi (pronounced yu-rin-gi). Crunchy fried chicken soaked in sweet, sour, salty sauce tastes so good and juicy! The chopped spicy fresh pepper served with this dish adds delightful flavor for spicy food lovers like me. You can serve this dish with rice, too.
Yuringi from Edward!
Daniel made steamed egg in a pan!
Daniel made steamed eggs in a thick pan instead of an earthenware bowl. It looks so fluffy and delicious! You don't need any special equipment to make this dish, you can do it in a pan like Daniel!
Mouthwatering cubed radish kimchi!
"Where are my chopsticks!" : )
I want to taste a piece of this spicy, crispy, garlicky, and freshly made kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) from my reader MaangchiLove!
Crispy seaweed noodle rolls
Simone in Germany made gimmari (crispy seaweed noodle rolls) with rice paper. Both the gimmari and the sauce look amazing!
Cream-ppang
MommaMel in Florida made this and said: "Oh my goodness I love this recipe sooooo much!! Your step by step instructions worked out perfectly and the cream Ppang came out INCREDIBLE!! So glad I gave this a try!! Absolutely delicious!!"
Simple but super tasty Korean table by Julius
Julius in Texas made this great Korean table. Spicy fish stew (maeuntang), stuffed cucumber kimchi (oisobagi), and fluffy white rice! Check out her homemade fish stew. The fish pieces look ready to almost fall apart, the radish looks translucent, and the broth looks very rich. This is what happens when you cook the stew for a long time. I can imagine how delicious the broth tastes, just looking at this photo. I should make my own maeuntang soon!
Maeuntang is the perfect kind of stew to make on these colder days, served with rice.
Messages from my readers and viewers
My readers and viewers always always make me smile, inspire me, amaze me, and make me think. Here are some of their messages that I chose to share with you!
One of my readers Haksaeng used to buy kimchi regularly until she started making her own. She gave 3 benefits to make her own kimchi: saving money, improving her cooking skill, and being happy with her family. Well said! I can add 1 more: deliciousness!
I have a good friend who sells ready-to-eat kimchi, and she asked me why I suddenly don't buy Kimchi products anymore. I told her that I am learning how to cook Korean foods and make different kinds of kimchi by watching Maangchi. I saved a lot of money, improved my cooking skill, and also made my Korean family happy with my home-cooked foods...
I'm wondering how many of you are doing some kind of business with my recipes? I'm always happy to hear that your food businesses are going well, especially during this harsh pandemic time. Jen already has a kimchi business, and now she is adding japchae, too!
Since I watched your kimchi recipe and made my own homemade kimchi business! Now I will add japchae to my business because many of my customers have requested the dish. First I will cook it on new years day!
I'm also happy that my recipes are helpful to those who are just starting to cook Korean food. Robbins in Australia bought tofu for the first time in her life and she was happy to make spicy braised tofu with it!
I just bought tofu today for the first time in my life and I was looking for tofu recipes. Came across your food channel. Loved it. Thank you. Really easy and yummy recipe. Love from Australia :)
My long-time follower Anisha sent me a nice message through a YouTube comment. She knows the 1st video that I ever posted! I feel like she is my real old friend even though we have never met face to face.
Maangchi, I started watching your videos from your first stir fried squid video. Slowly slowly I started learning about Korean food. I now make ssamjang and Kimchi often. Your recipes are delicious But i really like your stories a lot! ...
Sometimes your comments make me laugh loudly. Anew Beginning is so funny! By the way, Korean proverb says, "If you don't have teeth, use gums." : )
As soon as I get my false teeth, this will be the first dish I cook. Looks so YUMMY!!!!
And then sometimes your comments make me emotional and I cry. Berlinda said her mom loved watching my videos, but passed away last year. I can tell Berlinda is missing her mom badly.
Merry Christmas Maangchi. My mom introduced me to your videos. She LOVED your videos, hats, wigs, and fascinators! She passed in late July but I'm sure she's still watching you make videos!
Rice cake soup on new year's day!
I made this rice cake soup just now to celebrate new year's day! It's Korean tradition to have a satisfying bowl of rice cake soup (tteokguk) along with lots of great dishes on this day.
January 1st, 2022, I want to say to all of you again, "Happy New Year!"
